Why Insulation In HVAC?

Why Insulation In HVAC?

2019-06-28

Reduce energy loss

Effective thermal insulation and air tightness can reduce energy losses in ductwork construction. It saves costing while helping to guarantee the appropriate thermal comfort.Thermal insulation of the ductworks can significantly modify the thermal load of a building. As we know, some thermal losses in HVAC installations are due to temperature differentials between the fluid -air or water- inside the duct or the pipe and the surrounding ambient air. Heat transfer between the two air masses causes a loss of efficiency and increases energy costs. This can be minimised by using the appropriate insulation.

Prevent condensation

When the temperature of the fluid inside a duct or pipe is lower than the temperature of the surroundings, and there is inefficient insulation, then the temperature of the external surface might also decrease. If the humidity in the outer fluid increases, then there is a condensation risk.Where mineral wools are used for the insulation of HVAC systems, a vapour barrier must be included to prevent the condensation occurring inside the insulation material itself.

Fire protection

Fire safety should be a key consideration in the design of all HVAC installations as fires can endanger the life of occupants of a building. Fire resistant ducts are the best way to ensure fire safety in HVAC installations as the ducts have the ability to keep their integrity for a given time period and to not promote flame spread during a fire. Therefore ,Insulation materials should provides fire resistance to metal ductwork while meeting thermal and acoustic requirements.
